3 tips from cleaning guru Melissa Maker to help us do our spring cleaning

Believe it or not, spring has arrived. And so has time to officially make our homes dirt-free. We get it – seasonal spring cleaning can be a daunting task. And despite the oh so gratifying feeling we have when seeing our sparkling living spaces, getting started is a real hassle. Fortunately, we have a solution, as we always do.

We thought it was time to seek expert advice. Lo and behold, we have Melissa Maker giving us some pro tips. Yes, the lemon balm maker of Clean up my space. Yes, the one who has helped us keep our homes dust and clutter free with her blog posts, YouTube videos and books. Yes, the same that is now one Clorox brand ambassador.

So we chose the mastermind of this cleaning and organizing pro to improve our skills and feel motivated to get started. And of course, to set the mood, because all great cleaning projects start with a good mood. Anyway, here’s what she shared with us…

#1 Don’t confuse spring cleaning with everyday cleaning

“I’ll do everything together when I start my spring cleaning!” If you caught yourself saying that, you, like us, are guilty of what Maker says is an absolute no-no. Cramming everything into a single project is what makes the process overwhelming. Doing the dishes, laundry and other daily/weekly chores and disinfecting hard surfaces should not be on your spring cleaning checklist. Melissa suggests that when planning spring cleaning, we focus on less regular tasks like dusting your baseboards or picture frames.

“Spring cleaning is more about maintaining your finishes, fixtures and appliances, much like an annual oil change for your home,” Melissa says.

#2 Don’t underestimate the power of a checklist

There are several reasons why a checklist is a crucial starting point. It serves as a reminder of things that need to be done and helps prioritize and weed out tasks that don’t fit our bill. Melissa encourages us to download a checklist (something that more or less matches our goals) and then customize it. An online checklist often reminds us of chores we might have missed. Take, for example, checking your washing machine for mold or getting rid of dirt that has built up in your oven (two important tasks on the list).

And while you don’t need to have an elaborate checklist or track the chore online for the chore, some cleanups are a must. Maintaining appliances (not just washing machines and ovens, but everything else) seems to be at the top of Melissa’s list. That is, of course, if you are not a tenant.

#3 Get your PTTs right

Wondering what PTT is? We were too. PTT refers to the products, tools and techniques you need to perform your cleaning. And for Maker (and even us, for that matter), the obvious choice is Clorox. Not only do they have bleach and non-bleach alternatives, but the newest innovation kills 99.9% of viruses and bacteria, including SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. 19. Impressive, huh?

The Clorox Disinfectant Wet Wipes, Clorox Disinfecting Mist and Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are part of his regular cleaning kit. The cleaning cloths are actually textured to trap four times more dirt and hair than Clorox Disinfecting Wipes. “My cat, like a lot of cats, throws up sometimes, and there’s something to be said about having the certainty of using something like these cleaning cloths and not having to think twice about it. that lives on the ground,” says Melissa.

And the sanitizing mist is versatile as hell. It can be used on countertops, doorknobs, restroom exteriors and oven doors. Just spray and go. In addition, it acts as a deodorant thanks to its delicious scent of lemongrass and tangerine.

BONUS TIP: Don’t overdo it!

This is the advice that matters most, at least to us. Melissa reminds us that cleaning is about taking care of your home. But this should not come at the expense of self-care. “Cleaning is about taking care of your home, but there’s also personal care, and if spending a ton of time cleaning doesn’t make you happy, you shouldn’t. It shouldn’t feel like a punishing task, just follow the requirements,” says the cleaning guru. Hmmm, now that’s advice we live forever.

Well, there you have it folks, the four tips to get you into cleansing mode and improve your cleansing process. Happy spring and happy cleaning!
