AEW Rampage Site Report: CM Punk Jokes About Hook Being Backstage Eating Potato Chips And Smoking Weed, Tony Khan’s Reaction, Kip Sabian’s Visits With Fans, Differences crowd between Dynamite and Rampage

Dot Net contributor Rich Bailin (and his son) attended Friday’s AEW Rampage in Washington, DC at the Entertainment and Sports Arena and submitted the following report.

-There were many women and children in the crowd. The crowd was also younger, perhaps more tonight than Wednesday. It seemed like an equal or slightly larger crowd than Wednesday night, which makes sense.

-I don’t know if it was shown on camera, although it would be hard to avoid it, but Kip Sabian was walking around the arena both nights taking pictures with anyone who asked. My son even got a picture with him and officially met his first wrestler. He sat front row both nights as well and through Elevation and Dark.

-Speaking of elevation, there was no one behind the commentary desk while the matches were going on. Excalibur, Taz, and Mark Henry were on Dark’s commentary tonight, however. The last half of Dark was a lot of fun. Much more fun than I expected and some good competitive matches that could have gone either way.

-I don’t know how it went on TV, but the crowd was 50/50 in the Jade Cargill vs. Anna Jay game. Hook, on the other hand, had the entire crowd supporting him with several “Send Hook” chants on both nights.

-Tony Khan came out before Rampage and thanked us for coming and said he would be back at the end of the night with a friend who wanted to say hello. That friend turned out to be CM Punk, who held out a hello sign before stepping into the ring. A funny moment came when Punk said we got to see Hook and the fans chanted “Send Hook” again. Punk said, “Hook would come back but he’s probably in the back eating chips and smoking weed.” Tony shook his hand and Punk said no. Hook does not smoke marijuana at this time. A fan shouted that it was now legal in DC for recreational use, and Punk said that was awesome. He said he might not smoke it, but that’s great news. He said Bryce Harper probably hated to hear that, then asked if we thought Alex Ovechin would break Wayne Gretzky’s record. Punk then played the loudest section game before saying goodnight.

-Has two big nights of wrestling this week at least from a live perspective. Sure, when we watch TV, we all nitpick or see things we don’t like, but being there in the crowd, if not everything, disappears. It’s an all-night party vibe and it’s hard not to get caught up in it. I know there are a lot of places AEW still wants to go, selfishly, my son and I hope it’s not another two years or more before we come back here.
