Cody Durden’s racist post-fight remark draws criticism

Well, that’s one way to ruin a hard-fought victory.

After 15 difficult minutes with Chinese opponent Aori Qileng, Cody Durden emerged victorious in UFC Fight Night 198 on Saturday, securing a unanimous decision with three scores of 29-28 from the judges, but that’s what he said. later which will be remembered the most.

During the post-fight Octagon interview, cage commentator Daniel Cormier asked Durden (12-3-1 MMA, 1-1-1 UFC) if the fight went like he expected it, and his response was terrible.

“I knew he was going to be tough, but I had to send him back to China where he came from,” Durden said.

The sentiment elicited an audible moan from those in attendance at UFC Apex, and Cormier – baffled by the sinophobia – didn’t even bother to ask another question.

Things were awkward when the show was referred to play-by-play man Brendan Fitzgerald.

“Alright, Cody Durden, uh, statement made, I guess?” Fitzgerald said. “The victory in the octagon is most important for this flyweight from Georgia.”

Cormier didn’t know how to react when he returned to his office.

“Fitzy, I was watching the highlights while he was saying that, so you know, you say that, I’m taking the mike, Fitzy,” Cormier said. “I have nothing else to do there.”

For his racist remark, Durden was criticized on Twitter by many other UFC fighters and some members of the media.

During his post-fight press conference, Durden doubled down and said his remark was not racially motivated.

“If they don’t like it, do something,” he said.

Or could you just do better? Yeah, do better.

UPDATE: After making the racist remark and defending it in his post-fight interview, Durden also went on Twitter to explain further and apologize “if I have offended someone”, which is always a very meaningful excuse in these situations.
