Whether posting your OOTDs is your full-time job or just the plot of your “Instagram boyfriend”, this new app is about to make your life easier, or at least locate your next stage setting. Conceptualized by Canadian influencer Emma Rose Leger and co-founder Justin White, SCOUT is a platform to discover places near you that have been recommended by “Scouters”, i.e. content creators. When you’ve found a spot that seems to get your heart pumping, you can unlock the coordinates (and shooting tips) for $1.99, which means the user who uploaded it to the app receives also a commission in the process. The Daily caught up with Leger after the launch to find out how it started and how it’s going…
What is your story ? When did you become a full-time designer?
After high school, I knew I wanted to pursue fashion, but I still didn’t know exactly where. I graduated from a program based on fashion and business and it really helped me understand what I wanted to do. For the social media course, I had to actively create and post on a blog. I ended up falling in love with it and continued to do so after fashion school. Once I realized I could monetize my creative efforts, I started negotiating branding deals and was eventually able to quit my 9-5 and the multiple odd jobs I worked at the time. . Since then, I’ve been a full-time content creator!
What do you like about being based in Vancouver?
Vancouver will always be my home because it’s where my closest friends and family reside. On top of that, Vancouver has (in my opinion!) some of the most beautiful outdoor spaces, beaches, and forests – I really love being outdoors and by the ocean. I feel lucky to be based in such a beautiful part of the world!
What are some of your most Canadian traits?
I really say “sorry” a lot for no reason. I know it’s cliché to say, but, I do. Sorry. I love poutine too!!
Tell us about the initial idea of SCOUT. How long has it been in the pipeline?
The idea for SCOUT was born a few years ago when I was traveling the world and spending most of my time exploring beautiful scenery. While part of me likes to explore places, it can be time consuming, tedious, and not to mention expensive when you’re driving all over a new city. I knew there needed to be a tool for the industry to help streamline this process and make it easier for anyone to find unique places in different cities. So SCOUT co-founder Justin White and I decided to make that a reality and in 2020 we hired a team of developers to bring our vision to life. The project had been in the works for two years before finally launching on May 11, 2022. Since then, we’ve seen 19,000 downloads and over 21,000 locations have been uploaded to the app. We are so excited for the sequel!
Is this the first time you’ve conceptualized a technological product? What were the first learnings?
This is my first time ever entering the tech space – I’ve never done anything like this before. I have experience launching multiple fashion and lifestyle projects, such as my multiple apparel collections with Beginning boutique, Nordstrom, and Call It Spring, but this is my first tech venture. I would say our biggest learning curve was working with a large team of developers and navigating the development process. There is also a lot more to consider when running a mobile app. For example, clothes and other products are one-time purchases, whereas with an app, you expect your users to keep coming back to try new features and explore new content. Taking on this challenge is a totally new and exciting experience for me!
In a nutshell, how does it work?
Gone are the days of driving around aimlessly, wasting time, energy and money trying to find the right location and backdrop. The SCOUT app streamlines the creative process of endlessly finding exciting new places when traveling to unfamiliar cities or places, or even your hometown. Beyond its basic functionality, Scout provides an incentive platform that rewards you for curating and sharing unique places. Hosts earn a commission each time a user “unlocks” your slot – monetizing the creative effort required to find newsworthy placements.
How it works?
Users browse their home feed for local and international public places posted by their favorite hosts. Users can use the explore page to find public locations for upcoming shoots and/or trips and organize their favorite locations in advance, saving them valuable time, money and effort. ‘energy. Once they have selected their perfect location(s), users can “unlock” the location’s exact coordinates, in addition to guidance provided by the host on the best time to filming, lighting conditions, parking situation, etc. the location will also allow the user to engage in the comments section of the post.
How do you feel now that it’s live?
This is a huge accomplishment! Probably one of the greatest of my career. I don’t think people realize how complex it is to build an app from scratch. It has been one of the greatest undertakings of my life. The response so far has been amazing. I always knew people would like the idea and I almost didn’t realize how many people Actually needed this.
Tell us about your recent launch trip.
To create a successful launch, we sent eight influencers and myself to two of the biggest and most scouting cities in the world, London and Paris, for six days! It was a great way to create major social buzz and connect with a diverse group of influencers from around the world. Each creator spotted both cities and posted their unique locations on the app to share with their engaged followers.
What are your top three tips for influencers looking to pursue content creation full-time?
It may sound cliché, but my biggest piece of advice is to start, now. What I hear most from people who want to make a career out of it is that they are “too scared to start” or “think it’s too late”. I don’t think it’s ever too late, there’s always room for more and the industry needs new faces and ideas. I always say being scared is only one step away from being excited! The next best tip is to be consistent. If you’re looking to make content creation a full-time career, it’s going to take your full-time focus! Once you get started, it’s up to you to show your creative side and I suggest finding a consistent content schedule. Finally, be yourself. You put yourself forward and people want to know who you are. Show your quirky side and don’t be afraid to be yourself!
Where do you find content/post ideas?
I get inspiration from everywhere, whether it’s other creators on Instagram, TikTok and even Pinterest! I find that my best work also comes from traveling to new places. And now, with SCOUT, it’s so much easier to run that content. I’m having so much fun unlocking locations from different creators and going there to shoot!
Let’s talk fashion. What five brands are you currently obsessed with?
Just five? ! It’s hard for a shopaholic! I love a lot of brands, so I love shopping on LuisaViaRoma, SSense, and Farfetch to check out brands I might not otherwise know about. A few of my favorite small businesses right now are Heavy Manners & Bare Minimale, which are some of my favorites for cute summer outfits!
Favorite summer trend?
Flip flops. I know it’s a hit and miss trend, but I love that flip flops are considered trendy now and you can rock them with any look. They are so comfortable in the summer! Plus, you can go high and low. I love styling my Havaianas and recently invested in a pair of Chanel flip flops.
Trend you can’t wait to see the back of?
Clogs. I don’t think I’ll get in there, but call me if I change my mind.
Top bullion coins recently?
I recently purchased a vintage beige Chanel backpack from the 90s. I absolutely adore it. I wear it almost every day and it has also become my mini travel bag! I use it so much.
Pieces that are still on your wishlist?
I love collecting bags and shoes and love buying vintage items so I always keep an eye out for unique pieces to add to my collection. Right now I want to treat myself to a fun and colorful Chanel mini crossbody for the summer.
What is your biggest dream for the future of SCOUT?
My dream is to continue to see the app grow, evolve and be continually updated to be an app that can really help the industry grow for content creators. My biggest dream is to see people make a career in SCOUT – with a commission earned for every unlock, there is huge potential for anyone with a creative eye to turn it into a source of passive income. As for Justin, he is definitely more technically inclined and aims to get over 100,000 users on the app within the year. He is also focused on making the user experience on the app as smooth and efficient as possible. His biggest dream is to see thousands of users on the app daily, not just because of the functionality but simply because it’s a pleasure to interact with, everyone loves a clean and responsive mobile app . Along with helping people find beautiful places and being home to an amazing community, there’s so much more to come for SCOUT…and this is just the beginning!
What is your biggest career dream in general?
Besides SCOUT, my personal brand is always at the center of my concerns and some career goals currently include attending one of the major fashion house shows during fashion week, becoming a long-term ambassador of a brand that I really love and already support organically, and move to a city in Europe for a year to see where it might take me, professionally and personally. And continue to grow my community the same way I always have, authentically, organically and true to myself!
