Lenovo, the world’s largest PC maker, launches its first

Fingerprint Cards AB (Fingerprints™) today announced that the company’s biometric PC solution is integrated into the power button of Lenovo ThinkBook 14 and ThinkBook 15 G4 laptops. Lenovo is the world’s largest PC maker, with a market share of around a quarter of global PC shipments in 2021.

“I am very pleased that Lenovo has now launched its first models incorporating Fingerprints’ biometric PC solution. There is a strong positive trend in demand for biometric authentication in PCs, which this launch illustrates. We expect strong growth in the near and long term, as the share of computers with fingerprint sensors is expected to increase significantly from current levels. Fingerprints is very well positioned in this segment, and we expect to be able to announce further product launches with our PC solution in the near future,” comments Ted Hansson, President Mobile, PC and Access China at Fingerprints.

The outlook for the biometrics market in the PC segment is positive. Around 350 million PCs were shipped in 2021, compared to around 300 million in 2020 and 270 million in 2019. The opinion of many outside industry analysts is that the PC market will settle at around the levels that we saw in 2021, a significant increase over pre-pandemic volumes. At the same time, the proportion of computers equipped with fingerprint sensors is constantly increasing. Today, perhaps a fifth of the computers shipped have a fingerprint sensor. We expect that figure to grow to at least four-fifths, more or less in line with what we’re seeing in the mobile phone industry.

The capacitive fingerprint sensor solution for PC, combined with our bespoke software and algorithm, performs fast fingerprint matching in accordance with the highest security standards while maximizing user convenience. It interfaces with Windows Hello and is available in two different flavors. In computers intended for private use, biometric authentication usually takes place in the computer’s processor (so-called Match on Host). In business PCs, it is much more common to use so-called Match on Chip, which is even more secure because the biometric data is stored on a separate chip. Fingerprint’s Match on Chip biometric PC solution is on Microsoft’s Approved Vendor List (AVL) for Windows Hello enhanced login security, meeting both Microsoft’s biometrics and security requirements.
