The Walt Disney World Railroad is three years away from what would become a six-year closure at Magic Kingdom. Originally closed for the construction of TRON Lightcycle Run at Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World Resort, it will remain closed long after the ride opens for an ongoing renovation, with no reopening date announced.
However, this week we got a glimpse of the return of Walt Disney’s beloved steam train to the TRON construction site.
Twitter user @bioreconstruct shared a photo of the TRON Lightcycle Run construction site. In it, you can see partially completed train tracks adjacent to the concrete queuing area for Space Mountain in Tomorrowland.
The user states that the tracks range from Storybook Circus to Magic Kingdom to Tomorrowland, writing:
Beginning of replacement of steam train tracks between Tomorrowland and Storybook Circus. The crushed stone is in a nearby car. The rails are raised in preparation for the sleepers. The concrete area is the Space Mountain queuing tunnel.

TRON officially began testing last month, but Disney hasn’t announced an opening date for the delayed roller coaster. Intended to open as part of the 50th anniversary celebration at Walt Disney World Resort, fans wondered if the ride would ever be complete.
Safer TRON Lightcycle Run
Based on TRON Lightcycle Run at Shanghai Disneyland, Magic Kingdom’s TRON will be a partially enclosed steel motorcycle roller coaster.
The last official TRON The update came from Disney last week when they shared a video of the coaster during a test at Magic Kingdom. Earlier this year, Disney Imagineers explained more about how test drives work at Disney Parks in a Disney Parks Blog post:
Our Walt Disney Imagineering project team will soon be celebrating a milestone in the construction of the TRON Lightcycle/Run attraction, as Magic Kingdom park guests get their first glimpses of vehicles on the track!
As we begin the next phase of test drives, we will soon initiate a process known as “push/pull,” where sections of the seven-vehicle train are slowly moved across the entire driving track. Once the track is fully ready, the trains will begin test launches at incremental speeds, with the team eventually progressing to full speed launches.
All of this exciting progress will be on view for our guests at Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park as the trains roll out of the launch area and under the attraction’s iconic canopy.
