Warner Bros. Discovery just had its third quarter earnings call and during that presentation, CEO David Zaslav explained how he wanted to put the focus back on established properties like DC and Harry Potter.

Zaslav said they needed to focus on franchises in response to a question from media analysts about how content will be different under him. He said:

“We are really going to focus on the franchises. We haven’t had a “Superman” movie in 13 years. We haven’t made a “Harry Potter” movie in 15 years. DC films and “Harry Potter” films provided a large portion of Warner Bros.’ profits. Motion Pictures over the past 25 years. So the emphasis on the franchise – one of the big advantages that we have, “House of the Dragon” is an example of this, “Game of Thrones”, taking advantage of “Sex and the City”, “Lord of the Rings, ‘We still have the right to make ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies. What movies have brands that are understood and loved all over the world?

He also made sure to include JK Rowling regarding Harry Potter:

Outside of the United States, most overall, Europe, Latin America, Asia, has 40% of the theaters that we have here in the United States and there is local content. So when you have a franchise movie you can often win two to three times the amount of money you make in the US because you get a slot machine. And a focus on great movies that are loved, that are pitched on tents, that people are going to leave early from dinner to go see – and we have plenty of those. Batman, Superman, Aquaman, if we can do something with JK on “Harry Potter” in the future, “The Lord of the Rings”, what do we do with “Game of Thrones”? What do we do with a lot of the big franchises that we have? We focus on franchises.

They had a “Harry Potter” sequel with the Wizarding World “Fantastic Beasts” series. But those movies started off relatively strong and saw a big drop at the box office.

Then there’s the charge to overrule Rowling for her perceived transphobia over tweets she made regarding women saying things like:

The tweets led to boycott calls on intellectual property, books, games, and more. of Harry Potter. While some take offense, many others don’t and even more don’t even know the tweets to begin with.

Now Warner Bros. Discovery is looking for content and money and the CEO publicly lists it, along with “Harry Potter”, as a franchise worth their time.

This could be great news for “Harry Potter” fans and “Wizarding World” fans.
